Intel Outlines Software Programs for Apple Developers to Boost Multicore, Threaded Application Design.
New Intel Tools to Help Apple Developers Maximize Application Performance
Intel Corporation announced new software development tools and resources through its Intel Software Network. These tools and resources will help Apple developers take advantage of Intel Core Duo processor technologies to maximize application performance on the new Intel-based Mac platforms.
The special beta versions of the Intel Fortran Compiler, Intel C++ Compiler, Intel Math Kernel Library and Intel Integrated Performance Primitives are available now. Intel will also provide other resources to assist with software optimization, dual core threading and migration information. More information on these programs is available at www.intel.com/software/apple.
These development tools are integrated into Apple's Xcode development environment and offer an alternative to existing tools and compilers. The Intel Fortran compiler enables the scientific and technical community to bring the fastest versions of their applications to Mac OS X and Intel-based Mac platforms using industry-standard math libraries and language. The Intel C++ Compiler provides the ability for Xcode users to apply targeted optimizations to performance-sensitive areas of their applications, allowing them to get the most out of the Intel Core Duo processor.
Intel augments these compilers with advanced support for threading through OpenMP and auto-parallelism capabilities. The Intel Math Kernel Library (Intel MKL) is a set of highly optimized mathematical routines designed for engineering, science, and financial applications that require maximum performance on Intel processors. The Intel Integrated Performance Primitives (Intel IPP) is a software library of highly optimized functions for multimedia, audio, video, speech, computer vision, image and signal processing.
Based on Intel's proven suite of software development products for other platforms, each product has been transitioned to Mac OS X's Xcode development environment to ensure complete fidelity with other Intel platforms, giving Mac OS X developers a familiar base to use Intel's powerful development tools.
The suite of development tools from Intel will be available for purchase in the second quarter of 2006, and are now available for free trial in the special beta program.

Acronis Privacy Expert Suite 9.0 Expands Privacy, Antispyware Capabilities
Acronis Supports U.S. Senate Action In Fighting Spyware
Acronis, Inc., the technological leader in storage management software, announced that Acronis Privacy Expert Suite 9.0 goes further to protect users' systems from spyware, malicious software and other threats than ever before.
Among the anti-spyware capabilities added to Acronis Privacy Expert Suite are a quarantine feature that enables the user to look through the list of the objects (files, registry keys etc.), deleted by malicious software removal operations and restore specific items the user wants to keep, daily updated spyware and malware definitions that can be downloaded manually or automatically, an improved Malicious Software Removal Wizard that provides the user with more flexibility and options on what to delete, and a newly rewritten pop-up blocker that provides the user with an extensive list of options and settings to meet their specific computing needs. The enhanced malware removal engine can identify and remove stealth malicious software, one form of which is a "rootkit", a program that can embed itself deeply into a computer, open the computer to potential security breaches and is exceedingly difficult to delete.
Additional new features include support for the Mozilla and Firefox browsers for the Internet Cleanup Wizard, an enhanced pop-up blocker that lets the user set security levels, and the redesigned Personal Shield that lets the user set their own protection level based on their specific needs.
The launch follows on the heels of the passage of Senate Bill S 687 in the Senate Commerce Committee of the so-called Spy Block Act, a bill that would make it illegal to place software on a user's computer without their permission. The bill, authored by Sen. Conrad Burns (R-MT), is now headed to the Senate floor.
Among the prohibitions in the bill are placing software surreptitiously on someone's computer in order to log their keystrokes, deny them access to their computer, and to place ads on their computer that they would otherwise not see. It also would make it illegal to change someone's default home page or bookmarks, alter settings related to computer security or disable their computer's security.

Independent Research Firm Ranks Borland StarTeam as the Market-Leading Solution for Geographically Distributed Development.
Borland StarTeam Recognized as a "Strong Performer" by Independent Research Firm.
Borland Software Corporation (NASDAQ NM: BORL) announced that leading industry analyst firm, Forrester Research, has named Borland's software change and configuration management solution a "Strong Performer" in the December 2005 Forrester Wave: Process-Centric Software Configuration Management, Q4 2005 report. The report describes Borland StarTeam as the market-leading solution for geographically distributed development.
Process-centric SCM is a category of development solutions that provide a centralized platform for storing, tracking and managing project assets across the application development lifecycle. According to Forrester's definition, processcentric SCM solutions automate software development management processes, providing "the cornerstone of life-cycle management." Process-centric SCM solutions enable organizations to drive increased team efficiency through greater project predictability and control.
Process-centric SCM solutions are particularly valuable in distributed development situations, where software development teams are dispersed across different locations. Distributed development can significantly amplify the complexity and cost of software development, exacerbating communication challenges, increasing rework and reducing time-to-market for software projects. StarTeam is designed to address the specific needs of distributed teams, providing a scalable multi-user environment that supports effective communication and collaboration across geographic and organizational boundaries. StarTeam's central repository can be securely accessed from multiple locations, and serves as the infrastructure to define workflow processes to increase control and visibility over distributed development projects.
